ABC™ Active Barrier Chamber Protection System

Standard wipers are passive. The Active Barrier Chamber (ABC) adds a low-pressure flush chamber and secondary internal wiper to remove debris before it reaches critical sealing surfaces.

ABC Active Barrier Chamber diagram

First pass at the rod entry point.

  • Traditional wipers are passive and cannot stop all contamination.
  • Fine particles can bypass the wiper and
    enter the cylinder.
  • Contamination can damage rod seals,
wear piston seals, score internals and
    increase downtime.

Flush chamber carries contaminants away before entry.

  • Dedicated flush chamber positioned behind the external wiper.
  • Continuous low-pressure fluid flow removes contaminants before entry.
  • Secondary internal wiper seal provides an additional layer of protection.
  • Sealed chamber keeps flush fluid contained and controlled.

Internal wiper cleans the rod before critical seals.

  • Extends seal life in dirty environments.
  • Reduces maintenance costs and unplanned downtime.
  • Protects internal components from contamination damage.
  • Improves reliability where standard
    cylinders struggle to survive.
  • Available in various seal materials.

The ABC Chamber is thicker than a standard retaining plate. See chart below for bore sizes and thickness dimensions. For anything larger than a 5″ bore, contact engineering.

ABC is designed for our H Series where the environment is harsh. It can be used on our LH Series as well but may require more engineering. Works on all mounts with the exception that front flange mounts may require more engineering. Consult engineering for any LH series and front flange mount applications.

What causes cylinder contamination?

Dirt, dust, fine particles and slurry can all contribute to contamination over time.

What are signs of cylinder contamination?

Premature seal wear, scoring, leakage, declining performance, recurring maintenance.

Do you use oil or water for the flush chamber?

The flush chamber can use an oil or water solution.

What cylinder mounting options can you use?

Can be use with all standard mounting options except for front flange mounts – these will require additional review.

Can you put on an existing cylinder?

No, the ABC requires custom modifications. The reason for that is the piston rod and tie rods will need to be longer for the ABC and will need to be replaced. Rod bushings and seals will also need to be replaced.

What pressure does the flush chamber need to be?

In the 0-150 PSI range for both water and oil solutions.
